We do not intentionally collect special-category (sensitive) data. Some information you choose to provide (for example, your relationship status, or details in a review or timeline entry) may reveal information about your personal life. Please only share what you're comfortable sharing.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Information you provide to us
When you create an account. You can sign up with an email and password, or with Google or Apple sign-in. If you use Google or Apple, we receive basic profile information (such as your name and email) from that provider, according to their settings and your choices. We do not require you to verify your email address before using the App.
During onboarding and in your profile. To personalise the App, we collect: your first name; your date of birth (used to confirm you are 18 or over, see Section 14, and for nothing else); your gender (required when you set up your account; collected to personalise the date ideas we suggest, and not used for anything else); your relationship status; your city and its country; and your preferences (date types, vibes, budget, and travel distance). You may also add a profile photo and an anniversary date.
Content you create in the App. We store the content you create, including: saved date ideas and bucketlist folders; planned dates and itineraries; timeline entries (the dates you've been on, with optional titles, dates, locations, notes, "favourite moments," reactions, vibe tags, and photos); reviews (reactions, recommendations, vibe tags, text, and photos); and swipes/likes in partner-matching sessions.
Finder answers. When you use Finder, the answers you give (for example: out or at home, the kind of date, the occasion, indoors or outdoors, the season and your budget) are sent to us together with your city, and we use them only to rank date ideas and show you the best matches. We do not store your answers: they are used to build that one list of results and are not saved to your account or kept on our servers.
Photos. When you upload photos (to your profile, timeline entries, or reviews), we store them with our storage provider, in private, access-controlled storage. Photos you attach to a review are not shown with the review: only you can see them, plus your linked partner if you share the memory the review adds to your timeline. Your profile photo can be seen by your linked partner, and is shown with any review you write (see Section 8).
Feedback and support. When you submit feedback or a bug report, we collect your message and, optionally, screenshots and basic device information (operating system, device model, and app version) to help us diagnose the issue. When you submit a date-idea suggestion, we collect the details you provide.
Safety reports. When you report content or block another user, we record the report (including the reason and any description you add) and the block, so our team can review and act on it.
3.2 Information we collect automatically
Usage data. As you use the App, we record activity such as the date ideas you view, your searches, your quiz answers, your swipes, and when you tap an affiliate/booking link. We use this to power features (like "Recently Viewed" and "not seen before" recommendations), to measure how popular an idea is, and to understand and improve the Service.
Device and technical data. We collect your device model, operating system version, app version, and time zone. The App sends your time zone when it loads the Explore feed, including when you browse as a guest, so the week's picks change at your local midnight; if you have an account, we also store it on your account to send notifications at the right local time. If you enable push notifications, we store a device push token. Our infrastructure providers also process your IP address and connection information as part of delivering the Service and protecting it from abuse.
Anonymous (guest) usage. If you use the App without an account, we create an anonymous session so that public content loads securely. Activity from that session (for example, ideas you view) is associated with an anonymous identifier. If you later create an account, that history carries over to your new account.
3.3 Information from third parties
- Sign-in providers (Google, Apple). If you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, we receive limited profile information from them (such as your name and email). Apple offers a "Hide My Email" option that provides a private relay address instead of your real email; if you use it, we receive the relay address.
- Service providers. The providers listed in Section 11 process data on our behalf and may provide us with aggregate or technical information (for example, delivery status of a notification or email).
4. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- Provide and operate the Service: create your account, sign you in, and deliver the features you use.
- Personalise your experience: recommend date ideas based on your city, preferences, budget, and activity.
- Enable partner and couple features: linking, shared bucketlists and timelines, and partner matching.
- Send communications you've asked for: push notifications for reminders, matches, and the Weekly Date Drop, and transactional emails (for example, password resets and account-deletion confirmations).
- Keep the platform safe: review reported content, enforce our Terms, prevent fraud and abuse (including affiliate-click fraud), and protect users.
- Provide support: respond to your feedback, questions, and bug reports.
- Improve the Service: understand how features are used, diagnose problems, and develop new features.
- Comply with law: meet our legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
We do not use your personal information to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you through solely automated means.
5. Legal bases for processing (EEA/UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR:
- Performance of a contract: to provide the Service you request (for example, creating your account, saving ideas, or enabling partner features).
- Consent: for precise location, push notifications, and any optional analytics that require consent. You can withdraw consent at any time (for example, by changing your device permissions or notification settings), without affecting processing that already took place.
- Legitimate interests: to secure and improve the Service, understand usage, measure content popularity, and prevent abuse. Where we rely on legitimate interests, we balance them against your rights and freedoms. You can object to this processing (see Section 13).
- Legal obligation: to comply with applicable laws (for example, retaining certain safety records, or honouring your data-subject requests).
6. Location data
Finding dates near you is a core purpose of the App, so location deserves its own section.
- Location access is optional; your city is not. The App does not require location access to function. It does need to know which city you are in, because that decides which ideas it can show you. If you decline location access, you type the name of your city instead (see below), and the App works the same way.
- Foreground only, with your permission. If you tap to share your location, the App asks your device for permission and reads your precise location only while you are using the App (in the foreground). We do not track your location in the background, and we do not continuously monitor your movements.
- What we do with it. We use your device location only to work out which city you are in. We store that city on your profile, along with the name of the place your device reports (used to personalise what the App says to you), its country (not shown in the App; it is used to show you only the ideas that ship to where you live), and the exact coordinates your device shared.
- Typing your city instead. If you would rather not share your location, you can type the name of your city. The letters you type are sent to Google Places, which suggests matching cities; when you pick one, we receive that city's name, country and the coordinates of its centre, store them on your profile, and use them in the same way as a device location: to work out which city you are in. We do not send your device location for this.
- How to turn it off. You can revoke location permission at any time in your device's settings. The App then stops reading your device's location, but the city and coordinates already saved on your profile stay there, and the App keeps using them to choose your ideas. If you have an account, you can change your city: go to Profile → View profile → City → Update, find your city again or type another one, and tap Save changes. A typed city replaces the coordinates from your device with the centre of the city you pick. The App has no option to remove your city altogether: email us at hello@dateideasnearme.co and we will remove it.
When you view a map of a venue, the App draws it with Google Maps, on iPhone and Android, and the map's coordinates are sent to Google to draw the map; Directions opens Google Maps. Google's Maps software collects device and diagnostic information (such as your device model, operating system, crash and performance reports, IP address and an identifier used only by Google Maps) and how you move the map (panning and zooming), which Google uses for its own purposes under Google's policies (see Section 11).
7. Partner and couple linking
The App lets you link with a partner using an invite QR code or a pairing code. When you link:
- We create a shared "group" and record both members' membership.
- Certain content becomes shared with your linked partner: for example, the shared bucketlist, shared timeline entries, and the "you both liked" matches. Your partner will be able to see shared content you add.
- Individual swipe choices are never revealed to your partner: only ideas you both liked are shown as matches.
- Content you keep private (for example, a private save) is not shared with your partner.
When you unlink or a partner deletes their account, shared access ends. Each of you keeps what you created yourself: your memories and plans stay in your own Timeline and Planner, and the ideas you saved to the shared bucketlist become ordinary, unshared saves in your own list. Your former partner can no longer see them, and you can no longer see theirs. If the two of you link again later, the memories and plans you shared before become visible to each other again; saved ideas do not. If a partner deletes their account, the content they created and shared is removed.
What the other person is told. When someone accepts your invite, we send you a push notification saying they accepted, with their first name (if your phone allows notifications from the App; this message is sent whatever you choose for Partner activity in the App's notification settings). When you link as a couple, we also set both your relationship status and your partner's to "In a relationship"; you can change yours afterwards under Profile → View profile. Unlinking is silent: we do not notify the other person, and we do not notify a partner when you delete your account. This is to help protect users in sensitive situations. You can also block another user.
8. Reviews, photos, and who can see them
Reviews are shown only to people signed in to an account, not to people browsing as a guest. If you block someone, or they block you, neither of you can see the other's reviews.
- What other signed-in users see on your review: your first name, your profile photo, your reaction, the text you wrote, and when you posted it. From the time you write your first review, other signed-in users (apart from anyone you have blocked or who has blocked you) can view your profile photo.
- Details stored with your review but not shown on it: whether you recommend the idea, the vibe tags you picked, the day you went, and your favourite moment. These are not shown to other people.
- Photos you attach to a review are not shown with the review and are not public. Only you can see them, plus your linked partner if you share the memory the review adds to your timeline.
Please don't include information in a review that you wouldn't want other people to see. Photos can contain more than you expect (for example, backgrounds that reveal a location). Your timeline entries are not part of reviews: they are private to you (and shared with your linked partner if you share them).
If you believe content violates our Terms, you can report it using the in-app "Report" option. See our Terms of Service for how moderation works.
9. Affiliate links and bookings
Some date ideas include booking or purchase links. Certain of these are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you book or buy through them, at no extra cost to you. When you tap a booking or affiliate link, we record the click (including which idea and, if applicable, your group context) to attribute bookings, measure interest, and prevent click fraud.
When you follow a booking/affiliate link, you leave our Service and interact with a third-party website or app. Their handling of your information is governed by their privacy policies, not ours (see Section 17).
10. Analytics, diagnostics, and push notifications
Push notifications. If you enable push notifications, we store a device push token and use Expo's push notification service, which delivers messages through Apple Push Notification service (APNs) on iOS and Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) on Android. We use notifications for things like date reminders, partner activity, matches, and the Weekly Date Drop. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
Diagnostics and analytics. To keep the App reliable and to understand how it is used, the App uses these two services:
- Sentry: crash and error reports, so we can find and fix bugs. Sentry receives details of the error (including the web addresses the App was contacting when it happened), basic device details (such as the device model, operating system and app version), a random identifier for your installation of the App, and the IP address of your connection. We have set Sentry not to attach cookies or request contents, and we do not tell Sentry who you are, but its reports can still identify your account: the web addresses it records can contain your account ID, and when something goes wrong on our servers while handling your account (for example, a failed account deletion), the report names your account ID.
- PostHog: product analytics, so we can understand how people use the App and improve it. The App sends PostHog named events (for example, that the App was opened, a screen was shown, an idea was viewed or saved, a search was made or a booking link was tapped), the internal IDs and categories of the date ideas involved, counts (such as how many results a search found, never what you typed), basic device information and the IP address of your connection, from which PostHog can estimate an approximate location (such as your country and city). A screen is named by its place in the App, never by the contents of a link. PostHog's automatic capture of taps and screens is turned off, and we never send PostHog your name, your email address, your date of birth, text you type or your precise location.
Analytics are linked to your account. If you have an account, the App identifies you to PostHog by your account ID (a random internal identifier, not your name or email address), so your usage of the App is linked to your account, including what you did as a guest on the same phone before you signed up or logged in. As a guest, your usage is recorded under a random identifier for your installation of the App, which is not linked to anyone. When you sign out, the App stops linking that phone's usage to your account. When your account is deleted, we ask PostHog to delete the analytics linked to your account ID (see Section 12). We use these analytics only to understand and improve the App, never for advertising.
We do not use advertising identifiers (such as Apple's IDFA) to track you across other companies' apps and websites. If this ever changes, we will update this policy and provide the controls required by Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework and applicable law.
11. How we share your information (service providers)
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We share personal information only as described here.
Service providers (sub-processors). We use trusted third parties to run the Service. They process personal information on our behalf, under contract, and only as needed to provide their services:
| Provider | What it does for us | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Core backend: database, authentication, file/photo storage, and server functions. Most of your data lives here. | Account, profile, content, photos, usage, device data |
| Google (Sign-In) | Optional sign-in method | Authentication and basic profile data you choose to share |
| Apple (Sign-In) | Optional sign-in method (iOS) | Authentication and basic profile data you choose to share |
| Google Maps | Displays venue locations on a map, on iPhone and Android, and gives directions | Map coordinates when you view a map. Google's Maps software also collects device and diagnostic information and how you move the map, which Google uses for its own purposes under Google's policies |
| Google Places | Suggests cities as you type your city, if you choose to type it instead of sharing your location | The text you type and the city you pick; subject to Google's policies |
| Resend | Sends transactional email (for example, password resets and account-deletion confirmations) | Your email address and the message content |
| Expo push service, Apple (APNs), Google (FCM) | Deliver push notifications | Push token and notification content |
| Airtable | Content management system our team uses to curate date ideas; may be used to review user-submitted suggestions and feedback | Content data; limited submission/feedback details |
| Sentry | Crash and error diagnostics | Device and error/diagnostic data, which can include your account ID (see Section 10) |
| PostHog | Product analytics | Usage and device data, linked to your account ID if you have an account (see Section 10) |
| Upstash | Counts requests to our servers so that no one can send too many in a short time (rate limiting), to protect the Service from abuse | Your account ID (or your guest session's ID) and, for some requests (for example sending feedback, searching for a city, or tapping a booking link), the IP address the request comes from |
Our core backend (database, authentication, and file storage) is provided by Supabase, our primary infrastructure sub-processor, hosted in the European Union (Ireland). We maintain this list and update it as our providers change.
Other sharing. We may also disclose personal information:
- With other users, as you direct: for example, reviews you publish, or content you share with a linked partner.
- For legal reasons: to comply with the law, enforce our Terms, respond to lawful requests, or protect the rights, safety, and security of our users, the public, or us.
- In a business transfer: if we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any change in control or use of your personal information.
12. Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, and then delete or anonymise it.
- While your account is active, we keep your account and content so the Service works as expected.
- When you delete your account (see Section 13), we schedule your data for permanent deletion after a 14-day grace period, during which you can cancel. After that period, we permanently delete your profile, saves, timeline entries, reviews, planned dates, uploaded photos, and group memberships from our live systems. Copies in our database provider's backups are overwritten on that provider's schedule.
- Guest/anonymous session data. If you use the App without an account, the answers you give (such as your city) stay on your phone until you sign up, when they are uploaded to your account. The ideas you view and the booking links you tap while a guest are recorded against your guest session on our servers, and carry over to your account when you sign up. You can ask us to delete guest data at any time by emailing hello@dateideasnearme.co.
- Certain records may be retained, in minimal or anonymised form, for longer where we have a legal or safety reason to do so: for example, content/safety reports, and records needed to prevent fraud or meet legal obligations.
- Diagnostic data (crash and error reports) can include your account ID (see Section 10), but it is not removed when you delete your account. It is kept for as long as our crash-reporting provider retains it under our plan with them.
- Analytics data (product-usage events) linked to your account ID is deleted with your account: when your account is deleted, we ask our analytics provider to delete it, and the provider completes the deletion on its own schedule. Usage recorded on a phone where you never signed in to your account is not linked to you, so it cannot be found to delete it; it is kept for as long as our analytics provider retains it under our plan with them.
13. Your rights and choices
You have choices about your information, and (depending on where you live) legal rights over it.
In the App, at any time, you can:
- View and update your profile, preferences, and content.
- Manage location and notifications through your device settings.
- Delete your account and data from Profile → Account settings → Delete account. This starts a 14-day grace period, after which your data is permanently deleted.
- Delete by email if you can no longer access the App: email hello@dateideasnearme.co from the address on the account, and we will confirm with you before scheduling deletion. Our Delete your account page explains both ways.
Depending on your location, you may also have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you, and request a copy.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Delete your personal information.
- Port your data to another service (receive it in a portable format).
- Object to or restrict certain processing, including processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent (for example, location or push notifications).
- Not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.
To exercise any right that isn't self-service in the App, contact us at hello@dateideasnearme.co. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. We may need to verify your identity before acting on your request. You can also authorise an agent to make a request on your behalf, where the law allows.
If you have an unresolved concern, you may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (EEA/UK: see Section 20A), though we'd appreciate the chance to address it first.
14. Children's privacy
The Service is intended for adults aged 18 and over, and is not directed to anyone under 18. When you sign up, we ask for your date of birth as the last question of setting up your account, before your profile is saved. If the date shows you are under 18, you cannot continue: the App deletes the account you have just created straight away, with everything in it (if that cannot finish at once, it is finished within a day), and signs you out, and the date itself is not saved. A date of 18 or over is saved to your account with the rest of your profile. Once a date of birth is saved to an account, it cannot be changed, to prevent circumventing this age gate.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@dateideasnearme.co and we will delete it.
15. Security
We use technical and organisational measures designed to protect your information, including: encryption of data in transit (HTTPS); access-controlled and, for user photos, private storage; database-level access controls so you can only access your own data (and shared data within your group, and other people's reviews as described in Section 8); secure storage of authentication tokens on your device; and least-privilege access to our systems.
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. Please help protect your account by using a strong, unique password and keeping your device secure.
16. International data transfers
We are based in the United Kingdom, and our primary database and file storage are hosted in the European Union (Ireland). Some of our service providers (for example, analytics and error-monitoring) may process your information in the United States and other countries. If you are located in the EEA, the UK, or another region with data-transfer restrictions, your information may be transferred to, and processed in, countries whose data-protection laws differ from your own.
Where we transfer personal information across borders, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK Addendum), or another lawful transfer mechanism. You can contact us for more information about these safeguards.
17. Third-party links and services
The Service links to third-party websites and apps: for example, venue booking pages and affiliate/purchase links. We don't control those services, and this policy doesn't apply to them. When you leave the Service (including via the in-app browser), the third party's own terms and privacy policy govern your interaction with them. We encourage you to review them.
18. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by another appropriate method, and update the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after an update takes effect means you accept the revised policy, except where we're required to obtain your consent.
19. How to contact us
If you have questions, requests, or concerns about this policy or your information, contact us:
- Email: hello@dateideasnearme.co
20. Region-specific disclosures
